Freistädter Silvesterlauf

Freistadt's historic old town in Upper Austria becomes a running course for the Freistädter Silvesterlauf on New Year's Eve. The start and finish are located on the Hauptplatz, and organizers state it is the region's largest running event. This road race caters to families and fast runners alike, with children's races commencing at 13:13 and the main race beginning at 14:14. Distances range from short children's events of approximately 100 meters to the main race of about 4.2 to 4.4 km. The main course consists of two 2,100-meter laps through the old town's alleys, allowing spectators on the main square to view the field multiple times. A recent edition attracted 570 participants, including 130 children, aligning with the event's New Year's Eve atmosphere: competitive for fast times, yet focused on enjoyment. Costumes are welcomed, with awards for the best attire, and previous race results show local siblings Niklas and Emma Scherb from nearby Rainbach as the day's winners.
