The Basler Stadtlauf begins at the Basel Minster, guiding runners through the old city's Christmas decorations before concluding at Marktplatz. This public road race in Basel has been held annually every November since 1983. Its main distance covers 5.5 km across 2.5 laps. The event also features student races, a 1 km Family Run for children aged 4 and older with family members, and invitation-only elite U18-U20 races over 3.25 km.
The course follows a central loop through Rittergasse, St.-Alban-Graben, Freie Strasse, Schifflände, Rheingasse, Kartausgasse, and the vicinity of the Kunstmuseum. Participants cross both the Mittlere Brücke and Wettsteinbrücke twice. The Wettsteinbrücke segment includes a 17-meter ascent. The route is planned to avoid tram and bus lines. The main race is open to participants from U18 to over 70, with category starts and net timing. Recent editions have seen approximately ten thousand registrations and have sold out. Winners are announced at the Marktplatz ceremony immediately after finishing, while Family Run results are presented alphabetically.
