Silvesterlauf Trier runs a 1 km circuit in Trier city center on New Year's Eve, starting and finishing on the Hauptmarkt. Officially named the Bitburger-0,0%-Silvesterlauf after its main sponsor, the event has occurred annually since 1990. It features separate starts for children, youth, women, men, fun runners, club runners, and elites. The main events are the men's Bitburger-0,0%-Lauf der Asse (8 km) and the women's Sparkasse-Trier-Elitelauf der Frauen (5 km).
The compact city-center course allows spectators to remain in one location and observe the leaders multiple times, creating a stadium atmosphere. Trier enhances the New Year's Eve setting with samba rhythms, confetti, party whistles, and sparklers. The event is nicknamed "the Sao Paulo of Germany," referencing Brazil's renowned Sao Silvestre race. Its inaugural run had 648 participants in the rain, with thousands lining the course. Notable past participants include Werner Schildhauer, Tegla Loroupe, and Haile Gebrselassie. The current course records are 22:18 for the men's 8 km and 15:15 for the women's 5 km.
