DM 5 KM ÅBENT VAND is the Danish 5,000-metre open-water swimming championship in Aarhus, organized by SVØM Danmark and Aarhus Havsvømning. The primary event is for junior, senior, and masters swimmers. Registration occurs in the morning, followed by a technical briefing. The 5 km race starts at midday, with medals presented afterward. A separate public swim, covering 1,000, 2,000, or 3,000 metres, utilizes the same course loop prior to the championship race, allowing non-championship participants to experience the course.
The start is a mass start from a rope, with men positioned on the right and women on the left. All participants hold the rope until the signal. Timing is recorded at a gate on a floating pontoon, where swimmers manually trigger the timing plate. Wetsuit regulations are determined by the water temperature on race day: below 19.0 C, they are mandatory; at 19 C or warmer, they are prohibited. Swimmers opting out of wetsuits may apply protective substances like grease or Vaseline. Medals are awarded to the top three finishers in junior and senior categories for both men and women. Masters winners receive medals based on age divisions. Juniors are eligible to compete in the senior category, and seniors aged 20 and above can also contend for a masters title. As an additional benefit for participants in Aarhus, DM swimmers receive complimentary entry to Lighthouse, Denmark's tallest building, post-swim.
