Carrera Pencona begins at Plaza de San Antón in Aldeanueva de la Vera, Cáceres, directing runners into the Sierra de Gredos. This late-May mountain race features a main event of approximately 23 km with over 1,350 meters of elevation gain, classifying it as a demanding trail run. The event also offers a Mini Pencona and a non-competitive hike, accommodating those who wish to enjoy the mountains without the full race distance.
The course departs the village via local streets, passing Calle Maestro Aparicio and the Fuente de los Ocho Caños, before entering the rugged Gredos landscape. The primary race is for adults, with the shorter race and hike open to participants aged 16 and up. Mandatory equipment is required, consistent with the mountain setting and significant climbing. The Ayuntamiento de Aldeanueva de la Vera organizes the race, and the Roman numeral in its name indicates a long-standing local tradition.
