The Marathon des Châteaux du Médoc is a 42.195 km road marathon held annually in September in Pauillac, located in the Gironde wine region of southwest France. Established in 1985, the event is organized by the Association pour le marathon des Châteaux du Médoc. It attracts a large, international field of nearly 8,500 runners from approximately 75 countries. While competitive, the day is not solely focused on speed; runners have a 6 hour 30 minute time limit, and many participate as much for the festive atmosphere as for reaching the finish.
The course winds through the Médoc vineyards, featuring wine-tasting stations and encouraging participants to wear costumes. These outfits can be elaborate and unusual, with each year potentially adopting a theme, like "Tales and Legends." The event begins the day before the marathon and concludes on Sunday, offering entertainment, food, tastings, dancing, and fireworks in Pauillac and neighboring villages. Organizers outline the race's core values as health, sport, hospitality, and celebration. They also promote environmental practices, including responsible food sourcing, use of public transport and carpooling, waste reduction, recycling, and preservation of natural areas.
