The Overnight Hakone Ekiden Sections 1-5 Run begins at Tokyo Station’s Marunouchi South Exit and heads toward Lake Ashi in Hakone. It covers the first half of the well-known Hakone Ekiden course in one continuous overnight effort. Participants can select distances from approximately 21 km up to the full 108 km, maintaining a consistent group pace of about 7 to 8 minutes per kilometer. This is structured as a guided endurance practice rather than a formal race, with an entry fee of 6,000 yen per person.
The course largely uses National Route 1, passing by convenience stores, train stations, and bus stops. These offer practical options for purchasing food, replenishing supplies, exiting the course, or taking a break. The most demanding section occurs near the finish, involving a steep ascent from Hakone-Yumoto towards the mountains; walking is permitted during this part. The event welcomes participants of all ages, including seniors. The core idea is that running over 100 km solo is extremely difficult, but completing the outward Hakone Ekiden course with a group makes the endeavor more manageable.
