Picnic Run Sakurae sends runners over a high bridge with a deep valley underneath, then makes them deal with late-summer heat before the harder climbing arrives. It is a demanding running event in Sakurae, held in the hot tail end of summer rather than in mild racing weather.
The route starts with that bridge crossing, follows a flatter stretch beside a mountain stream, and then turns into the race’s notable steep hill in the second half. Finishers receive cold somen noodles, sweet 20th Century pears, and access to a hot spring afterward. This milestone edition also brings Olympic medalist Eric Wainaina as a guest.
