Runners gather at the Imperial Palace Clock Tower for the Sports Mate Run Imperial Palace Marathon, a small morning road race on Tokyo’s Imperial Palace outer loop. The loop is 5 km, so the race menu is simple: parent-child 5 km, solo 5 km, 10 km, 15 km, 20 km, and a four-person 20 km relay. All categories start together in the morning, with timing available for runners who want an official mark. The field is capped at 200 people, which makes it closer to a local running meet than a big-city marathon.
The route uses repeated laps of the Imperial Palace circuit: one lap for 5 km, two for 10 km, three for 15 km, and four for 20 km. The parent-child race is for children from age three through elementary school with a guardian, while the longer solo races are for junior-high age and up. The 10 km, 5 km, and parent-child races have no time limit, but 15 km and 20 km runners have two hours, and anyone not starting the final lap by 11:00 AM is stopped. Finishers receive a completion certificate on the day, bibs are picked up at reception, and there is no baggage storage, so runners need to manage their own gear.
