The Tomioka Reconstruction Road Race is a local event in Tomioka, Fukushima, established to aid the town after its evacuation order was rescinded. The program offers 10 km and 5 km races, alongside parent-child and children’s divisions, with age groups for junior high students, high school students, adults, and those 60 and older. It is a timed race using disposable tags, maintaining a modest scale typically between 500 and 1,200 participants, giving it the feel of a local race day rather than a large city event. The course follows an out-and-back route. The 5 km race begins with a steep downhill, which demands effort near the finish. Participants frequently recall the final uphill section as particularly memorable: steep, nearly vertical, and challenging in the way only a late-race climb can be. Olympic marathon champion Naoko Takahashi is a significant figure at the event, leading warm-ups with a microphone, offering guidance and encouragement, greeting finishers with high-fives, and participating in an afternoon talk show. The venue provides ample space for participants, and the Budokan offers a dry indoor alternative in case of rain.
