Junior Challenge Day is a free running event for children in Morioka, Iwate, presented by the Iwate Morioka City Marathon and organized by its executive committee. It takes place in July at the Iwate Prefectural Sports Park Athletics Stadium in Mitake. Separate races are held for each elementary school grade: first and second graders compete over 400 meters, third and fourth graders over 800 meters, and fifth and sixth graders over 1200 meters. The format is designed for beginners, without timing measurements, and the field is expected to consist of around one hundred participants rather than a large mass race.
All races occur on the stadium track, making them short, clear, and easy for families to follow. The morning program also includes warm-up exercises and a soccer experience session with support from Iwate Grulla Morioka players. Former Japan national team player Koki Mizuno is listed as an instructor. Applications are managed through e-moshicom, and proxy entries are permitted. While venue payment is noted, all elementary school race entries are free. Past organizer feedback has indicated some parking and communication issues, so families should verify access details beforehand.
