Omloop Flevoland begins at Sportpark Langezand-AV Spirit in Lelystad, offering road cyclists four route options: 75, 95, 125, or 175 km. The event also features Strade Bianche Flevoland for gravel and mountain bikes, with 55, 75, and 95 km choices. The cycling takes place within Flevoland’s open polder landscape, where wind can either impede progress or accelerate riders across extensive dikes and polder roads.
The routes incorporate quiet cycle paths, roads with minimal traffic, and polder dikes surrounding Lelystad, featuring ditches, canals, and pumping stations. Flevoland lies approximately 5 meters below sea level, created by reclaiming a section of the Zuiderzee, meaning participants ride over land that was once the seabed. The local motto is “WIND-WATER-WEIDS,” reflecting the focus on open expanses, water management, and the challenging riding conditions of the Dutch polder. A specific local test is the Muur van Woei, a wind-affected climb that challenges riders when gusts create difficult conditions.
