Elgrittet begins and ends at Høland stadion in Løken, located at the Høland idretts- og ungdomslag facility. It typically takes place on the last Sunday in May, with starts beginning at noon. This event offers multiple distances rather than a single race. The program includes children’s rides, Knøtterittet and Kalverittet, alongside Elgrittet distances of 10 km, 20 km, 32 km, and 54 km. Para cycling is available over 10 km, 20 km, and 50 km. Some races employ timing, while others do not, accommodating both riders seeking a recorded result and those aiming simply to finish a course.
Elgrittet originated as a cross-country mountain bike race, but organizers have since introduced options for e-bikes, gravel bikes, and para cycling. The children’s rides follow marked courses at and near Høland stadion. The 10 km and 20 km routes are shorter, untimed options designed for a wide range of participants. The 32 km route features a longer singletrack section and is suitable only for mountain bikes, while the longest standard option covers 54 km. Course maps and descriptions can be downloaded as GPX files. Post-ride, the stadium facilities are available to participants, and prizes are awarded. Tired riders are served elk stew, a fitting nod to the race's name.
