The Warsaw Marathon crosses Poland’s capital, held annually since 1979. This 42.2 km city marathon ranks among Europe's oldest continuously run events and is Central Europe’s largest. Recent editions saw approximately 11,800 registered runners and 9,500 finishers from 104 countries, giving it an international feel while maintaining its status as a Polish sporting institution.
The race originated as the Peace Marathon, with over two thousand participants in Warsaw when such a large event was uncommon in Eastern Europe. The course follows central city streets, winding through Warsaw’s historic rebuilt areas and contemporary districts. A notable detail for time-focused runners is the reported availability of pacers every five minutes, beginning at a 2:10 pace. Its distinctive tradition involves a finisher’s medal that splits in half, allowing it to be shared, transforming the finish into a communal act rather than a personal memento.
