Corrida de São João

Corrida de São João is a running event in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, held in June near Saint John's Day. It features a 10 km race and a 7 km walk, suitable for runners seeking a short road race and for participants who wish to join the festivities on foot. The course is set along the south bank of the Douro River, near the coast and opposite Porto, with the Dom Luís I bridge providing access. The route follows the pedestrian streets of Canidelo and extends along Praia de Miramar, positioning the event between urban streets, riverside scenery, and the Atlantic coast. The broader Saint John festival has roots in pagan summer-solstice and fertility traditions, and its unique local custom of tapping people on the head with leeks or lemongrass is now often represented by playful plastic hammers. Vila Nova de Gaia also offers wine cellars, the Serra do Pilar monastery, and the fishing village of Afurada for exploration before or after the event.
