The Helena Outdoor Triathlon, or HOTri, takes place at Spring Meadow Lake State Park in Helena, Montana, situated between Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. It offers multiple race formats beyond a single triathlon: participants can choose the triathlon, sprint aqua-bike, sprint duathlon, a super sprint for beginners, or a 5K Fun Run. Most distances have a virtual participation option, including medals for those who complete it remotely.
The swim occurs in a spring-fed, man-made lake. The bike course utilizes recently repaved two-lane roads, with sheriffs present for safety. The run is a flat, fast trail, suitable for new racers and challenging for experienced ones. Finishers receive practical, local items: triathlon, duathlon, and aqua-bike participants get a shirt, a post-race meal, and age-group awards up to third place. All 5K finishers receive a medal. The Fun Run serves as a fundraiser, with net proceeds benefiting local charities such as Prickly Pear Land Trust, Queen City Wheel House, and Helena Food Share.
