The Schauinslandkönig is a summer hill-climb time trial on Schauinsland, the local mountain above Freiburg in the Black Forest. Participants climb 11.5 kilometers and approximately 800 meters on the road. The race format is straightforward: start at the bottom, ride hard uphill, and stop the clock at the summit. Over 1,000 individuals participate, and it is part of the Schwarzwaldkönig series, alongside the Kandelkönig Bergzeitfahren.
The participant field is broader than typical road-bike races. In addition to racing bikes, the start list may feature tandems, child bike trailers, folding bikes, unicycles, inline skates, ski rollers, and handbikes; e-bikes are prohibited. The event also hosts a Para cycling action day with a talent identification camp, supported by Germany’s national Para cycling coach Gregor Lang. Freiburg’s broader cycling community is also visible around the same time through Stadtradeln, where thousands of local residents record millions of kilometers by bicycle.
