Freiburg sits at the edge of the Black Forest with immediate access to rolling and technical singletrack; the Waldhaus Bike Marathon and Kinzigtal Gravel Ride showcase the region's steep forested terrain and gravel networks rising 600–800m from the city. Runners benefit from the flat Rhine Valley floor but most seek the forest trails immediately east—elevation gain is unavoidable and rewarding. Cyclists dominate here: road riders tackle the valley climbs into the Vosges (France, 30km west) or loop south through wine villages, while mountain bikers and gravel riders treat the Black Forest trails as their primary playground.
