Mein Freiburg Marathon

The Mein Freiburg Marathon is a spring road race in Freiburg, typically held in March or April. It features marathon, half marathon, 10 km, relay, company, and children’s races over the same weekend. Established in 2004, it rapidly became one of Germany’s larger marathons by finisher count and is now managed locally by Freiburg Wirtschaft Touristik und Messe and the Baden Athletics Association. The marathon course consists of two half-marathon laps, beginning and ending at the exhibition grounds. The route passes through Seepark and Dietenbachpark, Weingarten, Haslach, St. Georgen, Wiehre, follows the Dreisam river, goes through Oberau and the old town, crosses Wiwilibrücke, and returns via Stühlinger. Live music is performed along the 21 km loop. The weekend also includes regional company teams, school relays, a mini-marathon for young children, and competitive half-marathon fields when the German championships are part of the event.

Megamarsch Freiburg

Megamarsch Freiburg is a 50-kilometer extreme hike starting and finishing at Messe Freiburg, the city's trade fair center. The objective is straightforward: complete the entire distance within 12 hours. This 50 km event is part of the broader Megamarsch series, which holds events throughout Germany, Austria, and Mallorca. Other locations offer 100 km versions with a 24-hour time limit. The Freiburg event is situated in the border region of Germany, France, and Switzerland, with the Black Forest, the Rhine, and the Vosges mountains defining the landscape. The Freiburg course combines asphalt roads with forest trails, featuring both gentle stretches and demanding ascents. Four aid stations are positioned along the route, typically 10 to 12 kilometers apart. Participants carry a Wanderpass, which is stamped to track their progress. Those who finish receive a medal and are added to a Hall of Fame. The Megamarsch series also provides a certificate after the second aid station and does not track individual rankings. The brand originated with an extreme hike in Cologne and has since expanded to cities like Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, and Hamburg. An average march attracts around 1,000 participants, some of whom use the event to fundraise for charitable causes.

About cycling & running in Freiburg im Breisgau

Freiburg Training Notes

Running: Locals run Freiburg from the Dreisam side first, because the river line gives you easy base miles without thinking too hard. FT-Lauftreff keeps it social through FT 1844 Freiburg, and the Community Run meets every Thursday from 18:00 to 19:00 at the HOKK on the club grounds. Pace groups sit at 6:00-6:30 min/km and 6:30-7:00 min/km, so nobody has to fake hero legs. The Running Unit meets Mondays at 18:00 on the Sandfangbrücke and covers 6-8 kilometers. B2Run Freiburg, Mein Freiburg Marathon, Rosskopflauf, and St. Georgener Stadtfestlauf give the calendar its anchors.

Cycling: Locals ride Freiburg like a mountain-adjacent town, because the Black Forest rises east and the Upper Rhine Plain opens west. The city centre belongs mostly to walking and cycling, with the odd tram going past, and the network is fine when you know your deviations. RUNDEDREHEN CYCLINGCLUB and Team Rynkeby keep the group-ride side visible from Oltmannsstraße 32. Gravel riders roll from Freiburg toward Tuniberg, Umkirch, Kienbergpass, and Luisenhöhe when they want options. Road riders use Schauinsland as the local test, and Schauinslandkönig starts with a twelve per cent gradient for the first 800 metres.

Season: Spring suits both runners and riders, because the Dreisam route gives you first greenery and warm rays without needing a big plan. Autumn suits long Z2 days, because the forests in the city and the neighbouring Black Forest glow hard and the air feels clear. July and August run hot here, because Freiburg sits with Karlsruhe among Germany’s warmest places, so locals move intervals early. Winter stays workable for both sports, because February often sits between 0C and 10C. Higher roads can freeze, black ice can show up, and wet woods can turn muddy, so locals stick to roads when needed.
