39. Refrather Herbstlauf

The Refrather Herbstlauf is an autumn running event held in the Königsforst, a large forest area near Bergisch Gladbach-Refrath, close to Cologne. It has been held annually since 1986, featuring standard road-race distances, particularly 5 km and 10 km. The start and finish line are located at the Schutzhütte “Am dicken Stock.” Participants can access the venue by car via Rather Weg or by taking the KVB line 1 to Refrath. The 5 km and 10 km courses are measured out-and-back routes, officially certified by the DLV, allowing for times to be recognized on German ranking lists. The event attracts runners from clubs, local athletes from TV Refrath, participants in championship races, and regular Volkslauf competitors aiming to achieve their season-ending objectives. The 5 km race has also served as a venue for LVN championship competitions. The 10 km record holders include Christa Vahlensiek (34:25) and Wolf-Dieter Poschmann (29:44). Recent results indicate competitive times, with sub-16-minute finishes in the 5 km and a 10 km victory by Felix Weber, Germany’s 24-hour record holder.

53. Königsforst-Marathon

Each spring, the Königsforst-Marathon takes participants into the Königsforst, a wooded area near Bergisch Gladbach, close to Cologne. Established in 1973, it ranks among Germany's long-standing marathon events. The race is a public road race offering three distances: a half marathon, a full marathon, and a 63.3 km ultra. The course follows a simple lap system: one lap for the half marathon, two for the marathon, and three for the ultra. The half marathon alone involves a 207-meter elevation gain, indicating it's more than just a flat run through a park. TV Refrath's running team organizes the event, guided by the motto “RUN GREEN RUN HAPPY,” and characterizes it as a runner-organized race. The half marathon attracts the largest number of participants, while the marathon and ultra distances add a demanding endurance element to the day.

Winterlaufserie Bergisch Gladbach

The Winterlaufserie Bergisch Gladbach is a winter road-running series in Bergisch Gladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, organized by Sportgemeinschaft Bockenberg. It begins near the Milchborntal stadium on Hardtweg, offering two primary routes: a 5.2 km short course and a 7.8 km long course. The shorter race starts in the afternoon, with the longer race following soon after, maintaining a compact, local feel rather than a full-day event. The series has been held since 1970 and is part of the Winterlaufserie of SG Bockenberg 1965 e.V. Separate races are held for children and school-age runners, while adults and youth can participate in individual runs or the entire series. Registration is handled through the organizer's website, fees are reasonable, and participants receive start lists, rankings, photos, and reports afterward. While reviews are few, they consistently praise the organization.

About cycling & running in Bergisch Gladbach

Bergisch Gladbach Training Notes

Running: Locals build runs around Königsforst, Refrath, Schildgen, Bensberg, Ommerborn, Rommerscheid, Moitzfeld, and Herkenrath. Königsforst does the heavy lifting for forest miles, tempo loops, and long Z2 Sundays. Running Team – TV Refrath gives the scene its serious-club feel. TV Refrath sits beside clubs like TV Herkenrath, TV Bensberg, TuS Schildgen 1932, and Turnerschaft Bergisch Gladbach 1879. Winterlaufserie Bergisch Gladbach offers 7.8 km and 5.2 km. Bergisch Gladbacher Stadtlauf keeps the city sharp with 3 km and 7 km. Refrather Herbstlauf brings 5 km and 10 km speed. Biesfelder Dorflauf keeps it local with 5 km, 2.1 km, and 0.8 km.

Cycling: Locals ride west for flatter cycling routes toward the Cologne Bay and east when the legs need hills. Bergisches Land gives you challenging cycling routes and leisurely tours with slight inclines. RSV Staubwolke Refrath 1952 is the cycling name locals know. The route covers 84 km and gains 485 m. Uppersberg gives the first challenging climb, and the high-altitude path between Altenhufe and Voiswinkel opens the countryside. Hornpottweg nature reserve, Nußbaumer Weg trail, and repeated Dhünn crossings keep the ride varied. Schwalbe Bike Park tours add hilly work around Reichshof.

Season: Locals treat summer as the easy season for base miles, forest running, gravel, and longer rides. Von-Diergardt-See gives hot-day swimmers a clean target after a run or ride. Königsforst stays useful when the city centre feels too warm. Winter changes the rhythm, not the habit. The 44th Königsforst-Marathon was surprised by snow, so locals keep layers ready and accept slower Z2. Winterlaufserie Bergisch Gladbach and the 57. Winterlaufserie der SG Bockenberg 26/27 give the cold months an anchor event, with races from 5.2 km and 7.8 km up to 11.7 km.
