Emscherbike ROAD is a permanent road-cycling series based in Herne. The official track starts by the church on the Cranger Kirmes grounds at An der Cranger Kirche 17. Riders choose between two long road routes: Tour 1 is 105 km, and Tour 2 is 148 km. It operates as a flexible permanent ride, not a single mass-start race, allowing participants to ride the route at a time that suits them during the season. The format is practical: download the track from the German Cycling Touren App or the provided link, ride it, pay the 4 euro start fee, then email proof via Komoot or Strava for kilometers to be entered. New permanent-event rules permit riders to join the course at any point, beneficial for those living near the route, though star-ride kilometers do not count. Both tours include planned food stops, such as Arentz Bauernladen in Lippramsdorf and Bäckerei Gatenbröcker in Polsum. Tour 1 also lists Unnebrinks Hofladen in Erle and Pizzaland in Gahlen, while Tour 2 adds stops around Raesfeld and Gahlen.
The Blaulichtlauf Gelsenkirchen, a German "Blue Light Run" held in Gelsenkirchen, will have its 12th edition this August. Participants can choose between a 5 km race, a 10 km race, or a half marathon, offering both shorter road-race distances and a longer option for more experienced runners. The race is organized by the Gelsenkirchen district group of the Gewerkschaft der Polizei (the German police union) and hosted by the 8th Bereitschaftspolizei Gelsenkirchen. Police President Tim Frommeyer acts as patron, Jale Müller is the contact person, and timing is managed by GID-Projects, the company that operates Get It Timed.
Running: Locals run Bochum like a dense Ruhr city, with West Park, the Ruhr University Botanical Gardens, the Geological Garden, the municipal forest, Weitmarer Holz, Lake Kemnade, and Lake Ümmingen doing the daily work. The city centre gives you short urban runs, and the Ruhr side gives you better Z2 when you want room. SG Wattenscheid 09, Schild Bochum, and DSC Bochum are the club names in the mix. Bochum Urban Run feels like the local anchor event, and Stadtwerke Halbmarathon Bochum, Kreis Waldlaufmeisterschaften Bochum, Wittener Abendlauf, and Herner Silvesterlauf keep the calendar honest.
Cycling: Locals ride the trassen when they want clean base miles. Parkband West, Springorumtrasse, and the CycloCross/Gravel Tour MH-BO-MH are the names that matter. The CycloCross/Gravel Tour MH-BO-MH runs 65 km and gains 290 m through Westpark and Zeche Zollverein, so it suits gravel, cyclocross legs, and steady Z2. 17 the clubhouse, and the Mittwochsrunde leaves Wednesdays at 18:30. Talk&Ride covers around 40 km at 20-22 km/h, and the schnelle Runde is forming. The Ruhr Heights hold the climbs, and Sparkassen Giro Bochum is the anchor race.
Season: Summer gives Bochum its best training feel, because the city sits at 142 m and gets short, warm days without much drama. Locals still respect the heat, because summer can push above 30°C on multiple days, and the closest climate station hit 40°C on July 25, 2019. Winter changes the rhythm for runners and riders. Freezing temperatures are common from mid-November to late March, so runs move toward steady intervals and practical layers, while bikes lean on lights, trassen, gravel, and shorter loops when frost, snowfall, or a rare -15°C cold spell shows up.
