Kölner Nachtlauf

Around 9 p.m., as the sun sets behind Cologne Cathedral, runners assemble at the Tanzbrunnen in Deutz for the Kölner Nachtlauf. ASV Köln stages this night race the evening before Ascension Day, offering 5 km and 10 km distances. Participants select their distance after registration: one lap for 5 km, two laps for 10 km. The start and finish are located on the Rhine's right bank, facing the cathedral and the Hohenzollern Bridge. The race commences with the river, the old town, and the cathedral already in sight. Approximately 3,000 runners and spectators gather before the start. The Tanzbrunnen provides an atmosphere akin to a concert venue, as its open-air stage typically hosts prominent German and Cologne performers. The course follows the Rhine, crosses the Deutzer Brücke toward the old town, and later utilizes the Hohenzollernbrücke, where participants pass by the bridge's numerous love locks. While Cologne is largely flat, the bridge ascents introduce some elevation gain. The route also crosses the exhibition grounds before returning to Tanzbrunnen. Here, 5 km finishers conclude their race in a lounge area with a DJ, while 10 km runners begin their second lap. Samba drummers along the course, crowds by the river, nighttime views of the cathedral, and post-race refreshments contribute to a relaxed, urban nighttime ambiance, distinct from a competitive championship atmosphere.

Ugly Christmas Sweater Run

The Ugly Christmas Sweater Run is a holiday fun-run format centered on participants wearing intentionally garish Christmas attire. The Leverkusen iteration, located in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, is a 5-kilometer road race commencing near the Ostermann-Arena on Bismarckstrasse. It begins at 11:00 a.m. and is untimed, positioning it as a relaxed community event rather than a competition focused on finishing times. The Leverkusen course traces the Dhunn river, goes by Schloss Morsbroich, and concludes back at the starting point. Other events adopting the Ugly Christmas Sweater Run concept offer 5K and 10K distances, alongside a free Kids 1K, encouraging participants to don ugly sweaters or festive outfits. The Lower Truro, Nova Scotia iteration, organized by Hub Town Runners at the Fundy Discovery Site, collects funds for the Colchester Christmas Index program and includes prize drawings, refreshments, and social gatherings post-race.

36. Lauf Rund um den Fühlinger See

Lauf Rund um den Fühlinger See is a Cologne road race taking place at Fühlinger See. All distances follow the regatta course, which is also used for the rowing world championships. The event offers 5 km, 10 km, a 21.1 km half marathon, and a 1 km children's race. This setup caters to club runners, adults aiming for a specific time, and young runners looking for a shorter event. The routes are officially measured by the DLV, meeting the standard for results that can be included on official athletics lists. The start area is located at Parking 1 on Oranjehofstrasse. The race prioritizes a practical setup: disposable timing transponders are integrated into the bibs, late online entry remains open until just before each start, and prizes are awarded to the top three finishers in each age group, with medals for the first three across the line in every race.

About cycling & running in Leverkusen

Leverkusen Training Notes

Running: Locals run the green core first. Ophovener Weiher gives you the Leverkusener Lasso, a parkrun loop with small but noticeable hills and enough passing points to cheer and slap hands. Neulandpark works for easy laps, and the EVL-HalbMarathon brings a proper anchor from Opladen through city streets, forest paths, BayArena, and a jaunt around Neuland Park with its manicured gardens. TSV Bayer 04 keeps the race side visible with the Talent- und Speed-Cross Leverkusen. Cologne races like Kölner Nachtlauf, Kölner Silvesterlauf, and Sommerabendlauf Köln sit close enough for extra goals.

Cycling: Locals ride the Balkantrasse when they want steady base miles into the Bergisches Land. The Dhünn loop starts at the Rhine, follows the Balkantrasse toward Burscheid, and returns on the Dhünnweg, which gets narrow in places. The loop covers 40 km and gains 218 m, so it feels honest without turning into a mountain day. gives the scene its club backbone. The Brücken-Tour runs 66 kilometers with 200 meters of elevation gain, while the Bergische Kaffeefahrt hits 67 kilometers with 800 meters, so the real climbing points east.

Season: Spring and early autumn give runners and riders the cleanest rhythm for Z2, intervals, and long weekend work. June brings the EVL-HalbMarathon Leverkusen, and August keeps things loose with Sommerabendlauf Köln in the evening. Summer training works well around the Rhine, Dhünn, Wupper, Neulandpark, Schlosspark Morsbroich, and the Japanische Garten when you want shade and steady footing. Winter changes the mood more than the map. The Ugly Christmas Sweater Run gives December some fun, and the Kölner Silvesterlauf closes the year while cyclists shift toward steadier roads, cyclocross-style paths, and patient base miles.
