E.ON Firmenlauf Essen

The E.ON Firmenlauf Essen is an annual corporate run in Essen, Germany, focused on company teams instead of individual participants. E.ON is the title sponsor, and bunert Events GmbH, based in Essen, organizes the event. Companies register teams through team captains, who set up an account to manage their colleagues' participation. The event features start waves, company groups, and dedicated team areas. Team captains can add runners, modify participant information, and re-register individuals, receiving confirmation after submitting company and runner details. The inclusion of team tents and table reservations suggests a social gathering where colleagues can connect before and after the run.

Sparkassen City Trail Essen

The Sparkassen City Trail Essen is a 9 km running event in Essen, Germany, focused on sightseeing rather than mountain-style trail running. Scheduled for July, it offers runners a short city-distance format: long enough to tour parts of Essen on foot, but much shorter than a half marathon or marathon. The organizer is Bunert Events GmbH, and the event is structured as a mass-participation city run. Entry pricing increases from an early-bird fee to regular and late registration. Children up to 12 receive a 50% discount, and runners may purchase a City Trail functional shirt as an event extra.

22. BKK Walking am Baldeneysee mit Mini-Marathon

BKK Walking at Baldeneysee is part of the Westenergie Marathon – Rund um den Baldeneysee weekend in Essen, Germany. The main marathon is a 42.195-kilometer race around Baldeneysee, held annually on the second Sunday in October. The Walking-Day for walkers and Nordic walkers takes place the day before. The walking program, which began in 2003, offers routes up to 14 kilometers, ensuring the weekend appeals to more than just marathon runners. The marathon has been held continuously since 1963, making it Germany’s oldest such event. The current course circles Baldeneysee twice, with an additional turnaround loop on the first lap. Its flat profile, early autumn weather, and lakeside cycle paths contribute to its fast nature. TUSEM Essen’s athletics department organizes the event, with volunteers managing the entire operation—a rarity for a German race of this scale. Entry is limited to 3,000 participants due to narrow sections of the course where faster runners might overtake slower ones.

About cycling & running in Essen

Essen Training Notes

Running: Locals run Essen like a compact Ruhr base, with easy meet points and plenty of pavement. Baldeneysee gives runners an 8-kilometre loop for steady Z2, tempo work, or clean base miles. Grugapark suits softer social runs through landscaped paths. Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex gives themed runs a proper industrial backdrop in Stoppenberg. TV Werden 1911 leans into road running and marathon prep. Lauftreff Essen keeps regular group runs twice weekly for all abilities. E.ON Firmenlauf Essen, Sparkassen City Trail Essen, Onkolauf Essen, Westenergie Marathon, and Welterbelauf Zollverein Essen-Stoppenberg give the calendar real anchors.

Cycling: Locals ride Essen on around 260 kilometres of cycle paths, and the old railway lines are the good stuff. The Railway Tour, Nature Route, Mining Tour, Krupp Tour, Water Route, and City Route make easy traffic-light base miles feel useful. Baldeneysee and the Ruhr River pull riders south for longer spins. The Emscher side keeps the north flatter and more urban. Tamperestraße to Langmannskamp brings climbing legs, because the route runs 37 kilometres and gains 945 metres. The route runs 4 kilometres and gains 239 metres. Riders treat these routes as anchor days, since the brief gives no named crit or gran fondo.

Season: May and August bring the busiest bike months, so locals stack Z2, intervals, and longer railway-line rides then. July and August bring the warmest summer block, even though the brief leaves the average temperature blank. Summer runners move around Baldeneysee, Grugapark, the city centre, and Zollverein without making the week complicated. Summer riders use the Ruhr River, the Water Route, and the venlo route when they want more time in the saddle. January brings the coldest month, even though the brief leaves the average temperature blank. Winter pushes both sports toward shorter loops, steadier base miles, and cross-style grit around the city.
