Rhein City Run

The Rhein City Run is a point-to-point half marathon starting at the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke in Düsseldorf and ending in Duisburg-Huckingen on Hermann-Spillecke-Straße. It takes place in late October with a morning start, typically attracting a few thousand participants. The course heads north along the Rhine from Düsseldorf, utilizing the promenade, paved roads through fields, and waterside paths toward Duisburg. Participants will pass under the A44 bridge, go through Kaiserswerth near the Burghof and Kaiserpfalz, proceed toward Wittlaer, and then follow a trail past Landhaus Milser and Angerbach. The event, organized by Bunert Events GmbH, has been held annually since 2016 and provides aid stations at approximately 6 km, 11 km, and 17 km.

23. MTB-Marathon

The MTB-Marathon in Pfronten is an Alpine mountain-bike race offering three distances: a hard day, a very hard day, or the full extreme version. The short route covers 26 km with 940 meters of climbing, the marathon route is 51 km with 1900 meters, and the extreme route spans 76 km with 2600 meters. It is part of the Mountainbike-Challenge.de series, with every option ascending to the Breitenberg mountain station at 1670 meters. The riding features proper mountain-bike terrain: steep ramps, forest roads, single trails, and descents. Teams can also compete in a kilometer classification, encouraging groups to distribute riders across the routes. The Klapprad-WM, a folding-bike world championship, is a 12 km mountain race with 640 meters of climbing. Participants in that race often wear costumes, lending it the feel of a local ritual.

Urban Trail Düsseldorf

The Urban Trail Düsseldorf is a relaxed 8 to 10 km urban trail run in Düsseldorf, Germany. It begins in the morning at the Jugendherberge Düsseldorf on Düsseldorferstrasse 1. This event is part of the Urban Trail Serie and is organized by D Running, which has new management since 2025. This is not a competition for the fastest time; there is no timing, start waves ensure a calm opening, and participants can jog, walk, or run at their own pace. From the youth hostel, the route crosses the Rhine and connects various city locations instead of following typical running paths. The measured distance is from one stop to the next, with additional steps within venues included. Runners might see modern architecture, historic sites, less-known areas, halls, museums, and other venues usually off-limits. Each location may offer its own small highlight for participants. Traffic lights must still be obeyed, and food is available on site after or during the run.

About cycling & running in Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Rhine first, because the water gives you easy Z2 and clean landmarks. The Rhine loop is 8 km when you want simple base miles. The Brückenrunden keep things classic, with the small loop running 4 km and the big loop running 8 km. hy:pe collective owns Tuesday 7:00 PM intervals. PAUS – Run Club Düsseldorf goes longer with 15 km or 25 km on Saturdays. The Marathon starts at Joseph-Beuys-Ufer. Düsseldorf Night Run, Sunrise Run Düsseldorf, Düsseldorfer Brückenlauf, and Megamarsch Düsseldorf are the anchor events.

Cycling: Locals ride the Rhine when they want steady kilometres, and the city gives them over 430 kilometres of signposted routes. One route runs 7 km with 155 m elevation. Another route runs 8 km and gains 110 m. takes riders on the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2017 route. Schicke Mütze brings coffee, rentals, and group rides into the mix. Rund um die Kö gives the fixed gear crit crowd an anchor event. Querfeld Rhein Crossfestival covers the cyclocross itch. The climbs are not the point here, because Düsseldorf stays mostly flat, with the city forest areas sitting east and south.

Season: Mild to warm summers make Düsseldorf easy for consistent running and riding. Locals stack Z2 along the Rhine, add intervals with hy:pe collective or Bridge Runners, and use Unterbacher See for a 6 km lap when the city feels tight. The Rhine glistens in the sun, the Gehry buildings whizz by, and the west wind usually has a say. Summer suits Düsseldorf Night Run, Sunrise Run Düsseldorf, and long rides toward Cologne. Winter changes the rhythm without killing it. Moderate winters bring little snowfall, so runners stay on parks and promenades, while cyclists keep the flat Rhine paths and save the forest edges for better days.
