Belfast City Marathon
The Belfast City Marathon takes runners from Stormont Estate to Ormeau Park in Northern Ireland's capital. This 26.2-mile road marathon is typically held on the May bank holiday weekend. It includes a wheelchair race, team relay, and 8-mile walk alongside the full marathon. Organizers describe it as "Northern Ireland's largest mass sport participatory event," attracting approximately 15,000 to 18,000 participants for the combined events. The race is AIMS certified and has been held since the early 1980s. The event weekend accommodates more than just solo marathoners, including club runners, relay teams, wheelchair athletes, walkers, charity groups, and first-timers. The Belfast City Marathon also hosts Northern Ireland's largest half marathon each September, beginning at Ormeau Park. While course records are competitive at 2:13:41 for men and 2:35:03 for women, the event emphasizes mass participation. A historical note: organizers once issued an apology when the marathon course was discovered to be 0.3 miles longer than intended.
