About this race
The Kainacher Bergmarathon is a summer mountain marathon held in Kainach bei Voitsberg, a village in Austria's Steiermark province. The primary event covers 44 km with approximately 1,800 metres of ascent and descent, meaning it runs considerably slower than a road marathon; participants should anticipate adding at least an hour to their usual marathon time. The race begins and ends at the village square in Kainach (542 metres above sea level) and can be completed individually or as a three-person relay. An 18.5 km option is also available for runners and nordic walkers.
The course ascends from the village towards the Gleinalpe range, peaking at 1,790 metres. The majority of the route follows gravel roads, forest paths, and trails. Early sections provide a clear indication of the challenge: after a brief start, runners face a very steep meadow climb, followed by a consistent asphalt ascent to about 6 km. This is succeeded by forest paths featuring several short, steep gradients. The relatively small field contributes to a more intimate, local mountain-running atmosphere compared to large urban events. The seven-and-a-half-hour cutoff necessitates strong climbing ability alongside marathon endurance.
