About this race
Perry's Paddock in Woodvale defines Light Horse Ultra: a timed loop run within Yellagonga Regional Park, honoring WWI Light Horse soldiers and subsequent service members. Runners often mention the dawn service, where the "crisp morning air pierced with the eerie horn" plays "the last post and reveille" before the race begins. It is a respectful and simple event, not ostentatious.
The course offers varied terrain: limestone trails, boardwalks, and paved asphalt, with gradients suitable for maintaining a consistent pace and completing multiple laps. As each lap concludes at the start/finish area, the aid station, race village, and spectators remain close by. Current and former service personnel participate alongside hundreds of community runners, continuing a tradition of significantly reduced entry fees as a gesture of gratitude. "We will ALWAYS remember them."
