About this race
Balkaniada Sky Race is a Bulgarian mountain running event held in October, centered near Karlovo, Lift Sopot, and Central Balkan National Park. The series offers participants four race options: a steep 3.8 km vertical race with 830 m elevation gain starting at Lift Sopot, and 12 km, 27 km, and 44 km routes commencing in Karlovo. These longer routes also feature significant climbs, with 595 m, 1600 m, and 2570 m of ascent respectively, indicating that even the shorter races are demanding mountain challenges, not just simple trail runs.
The Classic 44K crosses the park’s primary ridge. The 27K provides a mid-length sky race for those seeking a demanding course without the commitment of the longest option. The event attracts a broad range of people; one past edition saw over 1000 participants, guests, volunteers, and partners gather. Balkaniada is also part of a larger framework of mountain running activities, such as BG Ultra Slam, a training camp, Hut Hop Race, and Balkaniada West. Its recent past includes hosting the World Masters Skyrunning Championships, highlighting the race's suitability for both skilled local athletes and international mountain running experts.
