The London Marathon begins in Blackheath and concludes on The Mall, following a largely flat course alongside the River Thames. This annual road marathon, typically held in April, hosts both everyday runners and elite marathoners. While the public race constitutes the majority of participants, the event also features professional men's and women's races, elite wheelchair competitions, and a 3-mile mini marathon for athletes under 17.
Founded by Chris Brasher and John Disley following their running careers, the race quickly expanded from its initial field to become heavily oversubscribed. Charity runners are integral to its character, having raised over £1.4 billion since the marathon's inception. The elite competition is part of the World Marathon Majors, and London's swift course has seen numerous marathon world records set, including notable women's records by Grete Waitz, Ingrid Kristiansen, Paula Radcliffe, and Mary Jepkosgei Keitany. London Marathon Events also introduced a paid 5K at Battersea Park on the Friday before marathon day, known as Friday Night Lights.
