St. Catharines-Niagara Training Notes
St. Catharines-Niagara hosts 13 Half Marathon races in 2026 within 80 km of the city centre — upcoming dates, recurring series, and other races nearby, all in one place.
Locals run Merritt Trail, Terry Fox Trail, Waterfront Trail, Seaway Haulage Road, George Nicholson Trail, Walker's Creek Trail, and The Twelve Trail East when they want steady base miles without overthinking it. The trail covers 6 miles of gravel and paved sections, and the north section stays popular with pedestrians. St. Catharines Roadrunners and Walkers meet Wednesday at 6:30pm at Cat's Caboose, then roll into Saturday coffee runs and Sunday morning trail runs at 9am. The Don McMaster Memorial 12 Mile Creek Trail Half Marathon & 7k, Run for the Grapes Half Marathon & 5K, and Welland Run 10K work as anchor events.
Locals ride the canal trail, Merritt trail, waterfront trail, Walkers Creek, Grantham rail trail, Welland Canal, and Lakeshore when they want Z2, intervals, or a longer gran fondo day. Welland Canal is the clean bet for a decent ride, and the path takes about 30-45 minutes one way on a road bike. St. Catharines Cycling Club brings the fast crowd with Tuesday fast training, Time Trials, Saturday training rides, Sunday training rides, and a Wednesday Women's Group. Amici per la Vita also pulls Niagara riders together. The 3 km paved loop from St. Catharines carries 346 m of gain, so the climbs are rolling, not mountain stuff. Catharines has 346 m of elevation gain, so the climbs are rolling rather than steep.
Summer gives the clearest calendar pulse, with the Canaqua Sports Mid-Summer Classic - Welland on August 2, 2026 and the Welland Canal Open Water Swim on August 30, 2026. Locals keep the canal, Waterfront Trail, and stone dust trail options in the rotation when legs need volume and the day is built for base miles. Winter changes the feel more than the map, because paved sections, gravel stone dust trail, and club meetups matter more when conditions tighten up. Runners still use the short loops and trail runs, and cyclists keep the Z2 honest when the road bike days get selective.
