The Riesentrail is a 47.5 km trail race starting in Suhl, southern Thuringia, Germany. It typically takes place in September, forming part of the Südthüringentrail weekend. This event offers a middle distance option, positioned between the 17.4 km Wichteltrail and the 64.9 km Heldentrail. The course ascends 1,932 meters, presenting a true forest ultra rather than a lengthy road run with some inclines. Participants have 10 hours to complete the race, with entry fees ranging from 54 to 79 euros.
The route crosses winding paths through the Thuringian Forest, venturing beyond the main forest routes into the hills surrounding Germany’s largest designated recreation resort. The 47 km race typically attracts just over 100 participants, including club runners, trail specialists, and age-group competitors. Südthüringentrail e.V. organizes the event, which includes a pasta party the evening prior, starter bags, finisher certificates, medals, shirts, and gifts. Trophies are awarded to winners, age-group rankings are published, and the race provides ITRA/UTMB qualifying points.
