About this race
The Ruhrtallauf is a March road race in Fröndenberg, organized by VfL Fröndenberg. Its main events are five and ten kilometers, with separate student races. The field is local and club-based, but the front runners can be fast: Dirk Große of Marathon Club Menden won both main distances, while Sarah Schäperklaus set a women’s five-kilometer course record of 17:25, which also led the Westphalia rankings.
The children’s races are central to the event’s character, with about 300 students from Fröndenberg schools and nearby clubs participating. To manage the participation, organizers divided crowded races by age group and shifted most student starts to the road, keeping only the youngest runners on the initial course. Finishers entered the renovated stadium through an outer gate, where spectators had gathered following a three-year hiatus of the race.
