About this race
The Gläserner Mönch Lauf begins and ends at Landhotel Schäferhof in Langenstein, near Halberstadt in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. This trail running event in the Vorharz is described by the organizer as the toughest trail in the region's foothills. Racing is planned annually following an eight-year hiatus. The event focuses on short, intense distances rather than a single long race, offering options for beginners, children, walkers, 5 km and 10 km runners, and routes up to three laps.
The course incorporates roads, cobblestones, field paths, trails, and stairs, leading to frequent changes in pace. The primary challenge is the ascent of the Gläserner Mönch and the 222 steps known as the “Will to Heaven”; each 6 km lap includes over 100 meters of elevation gain. Beginners have a flatter 4.5 km option that bypasses the main climb, while experienced runners can complete the ascent two or three times. The event, first held in 1993 and organized by Pro Sport Harz Laufbewerbe, now features a three-person relay.
