About this race
The Königsschlösser Marathon takes place in Füssen, Bavaria’s East Allgäu, in late July. The weekend features road races for various age groups: children’s races from 300 to 1200 meters, youth races, a 10 km city run, a half marathon, and the full 42.195 km marathon. Participants include local runners, athletes from other parts of Germany and abroad, and both recreational and professional runners. The Bambini races traditionally begin the weekend, with the longest race reserved for distance specialists.
The marathon follows the half marathon route twice, allowing runners to experience the landscape around Füssen two times. After departing the town, the course crosses Hopfer forest, encircles Lake Hopfensee, crosses the Lech floodplain, runs alongside Lake Forggensee, and winds through meadows and Schwansee woodland before heading back toward Füssen. The most notable section passes the royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, the inspiration for the race’s name. A recent edition saw over 800 starters, creating a substantial race atmosphere without the scale of a massive city marathon.
