SM-kilpailut

The SM-kilpailut are Finland’s national dialect-speaking championships, a speech competition organized first in 2001. The contest moves between host towns around Finland, with past stops including Savonlinna, Kuopio, Rauma, Kajaani, Ilmajoki, and Helsinki. Local dialect and heritage associations handle the event in the host town together with Suomen Heimot ry. Competitors enter either as individuals or in three-person teams. The individual contest awards the top three speakers, while the team contest awards only the winner; some editions have skipped the team event. Professor Kalevi Wiik served for many years as chief judge, linking the competition to Finnish language scholarship and local speech traditions. The team winners show how regional the event is: Savo, Kainuu, Satakunta, Rauma, Etela-Pohjanmaa, and Tornionjokilaakso have all won the team title.
