Finnish endurance is shaped by extreme seasons. Helsinki City Marathon and the Finlandia-hiihto cross-country ski race are the headline events; summer running anchors on Helsinki, Turku and Tampere marathons; ski-orienteering has a deep winter scene. Cyclists exploit the long summer days for ultra-endurance (Helsinki–Tallinn 24-hour rides, Saimaa lake-route gravel) and forest-road riding through the Päijänne lakes. Terrain is gently rolling rather than mountainous, so endurance dominates over climbing — and saunas after every long run are obligatory.
