The Trail du Chemin des Dames follows the Chemin des Dames, a World War I ridge between Laon and Soissons in Aisne, Hauts-de-France. The Chamouille event, held in early December, offers a 12 km night race, a 12 km daytime race, and a 25 km option. Longer Chemin des Dames formats are also listed, including a 42 km course with approximately 700 m of elevation gain near Laon.
The courses traverse forest paths, limestone plateaus, and memorial sites, lending the run historical significance beyond that of a typical trail race. The shorter races involve around 300 m of climbing. The 42 km route, however, reaches only about 200 m in altitude, suggesting the challenge lies in repeated ascents, varied terrain, and maintaining pace rather than significant mountain climbing. The 12 km race is suitable for beginners, the 25 km or longer distances for experienced trail runners, and the night race upholds the series' tradition of running the ridge by headlamp in winter.
