About this race
The Chiltern Ridge Classic 50K begins at Berkhamsted Castle, leading runners into the Chiltern Hills for 50 kilometers along ridge trails and established long-distance paths. Typically held in late April or early May, the event features approximately 1,000 meters of elevation gain, positioning it as a challenging trail race that bridges the gap between a runnable course and an ultra-distance effort. This race is the primary event for Runaway Racing, a Wendover-based company that organizes trail half marathons and 50K races. It holds UTMB Index status, and a recent edition saw over 300 participants complete the course.
The route travels from Berkhamsted towards Wendover, incorporating the Ashridge Estate and segments of the Ridgeway before connecting Ivinghoe Beacon, Coombe Hill, Whiteleaf Hill, and other prominent points along the Chiltern ridge. The course design offers runners continuous views from open hills, differing from a single climb-and-descent profile. It attracts trail runners seeking a spring 50K, individuals progressing from shorter Runaway events, and local participants familiar with the Watford, Ashridge, and Wendover trails. Runaway Racing also has roots in the lockdown era, during which Chris and his team facilitated runner engagement through socially distanced time trials.
