About this race

The Suffolk Coastal Path 50K Ultra is a point-to-point trail race on England’s east coast. It starts in a beachside garden in Lowestoft and finishes at Moot Hall in Aldeburgh. Runners first gather at the finish, then board coaches to the start. The day begins with the logistics of being transported up the coast before running back down it. It is a flat 50 km, not a mountain-style ultra, but the varied surface presents challenges: road early on, then dirt tracks, worn paths, beach, sand, dunes, farms, hamlets, villages, and coastal tracks. The course appears fast on paper, but the sand is the challenge. Race director Chris warns runners that one eroded section is now “naff” and jokes he does not want complaints about sand afterward. Aid stations are well stocked and placed with more support later in the race, which is important when the softer ground begins to take its toll. The event attracts runners seeking a runnable ultra over a large-city road race, with sufficient organisation to handle coaches, registration, bag drop, facilities, and an on-time start without fuss.
