The Danube defines this race, with the route following its banks past Buda Castle, Parliament, Gellert Hill, Margaret Island, and several bridges that integrate the river into the course. Now in its 41st edition, the Budapesti Maraton has the character of a major capital city race: active, historic, and more a true festival centered on running than a subdued Sunday event.
Expect a diverse field, from elite athletes to recreational runners and families. Activities will occur around the routes, and spectators will make the long sections feel less solitary. A fun tradition is that the post-race meal can be as local as the run: goulash, langos, goose liver, and chimney cake each have their place, offering a good reason to save some appetite for after the finish.
