Erzberg sets the tone before you even start: stepped mine benches, bare rock, and the "raw, unique atmosphere of the mine environment" instead of forest singletrack. The Erzberg Run takes runners through an active mine, closed to the public most of the year, climbing toward the peak of the "Styrian Pyramid." It feels less like a polished road event and more like being let into a working mountain for one hard morning.
The route starts more gently, then keeps tightening the screws as it rises through the mine levels, including a tunnel more than a kilometer long. The final ascent is the part people will talk about afterward: steep, exposed, and properly stubborn before the finish on the top level. Runners come for the climb, the "unique start ceremony," and the payoff of a "breathtaking view of the Eisenerz Alps" once the legs stop arguing.
