About this race
The Pantelleria Trail is a trail-running and walking event held in May on Pantelleria, a volcanic island in the Mediterranean Sea located between Sicily and Tunisia. The primary race covers 43 km with 2,300 meters of elevation gain. A shorter option, the Trail di Montagna Grande, is 17 km with 1,000 meters of climbing. For walkers, a 17 km Walktrail offers the same elevation gain, and the 9 km Camminata del Monastero has 300 meters of climbing.
The courses traverse the trails of Pantelleria National Park, with at least 90% of the paths being unpaved, featuring very steep sections and rugged terrain. Participants should be aware that this is a demanding event. The rules emphasize the need for adequate preparation, noting that injuries can be severe and rescue services may face delays. Montagna Grande, the island's highest point at 836 meters, along with hot springs and steam vents, highlights the island's volcanic nature. The landscape is further defined by cultivated terraces of capers and grapes, the latter used in producing Passito di Pantelleria wine.
