Run Rome The Marathon

Run Rome The Marathon is an annual road marathon in Rome, typically held in spring. It begins at the Fori Imperiali and concludes on Via dei Fori Imperiali. This race has been a fixture in the city’s running schedule since 1982. It is part of a larger race weekend that also features the ACEA RUN4ROME relay and a 5K Fun Run on Saturday. The Expo Village is located at Circo Massimo, near a Metro B station, and admission to the expo is complimentary. The marathon employs several start waves, and its program includes a separate start for wheelchair participants and pushers. The course showcases numerous Roman landmarks, passing the Circus Maximus and running close to the Colosseum before finishing on the imperial road. The race has twice hosted the Italian Marathon Championships. A special millennium edition commenced in Saint Peter’s Square, using the basilica’s bells as the starting signal. Another edition commemorated Abebe Bikila’s Olympic marathon victory in Rome; the men’s winner finished barefoot as a tribute. The participants include international elites, club runners, charity participants, relay teams, and those enjoying the entire Rome weekend. Finisher shirts, the Vittoria mascot, and the #RunLikeAGladiator tag contribute to the event’s distinct traditions.

Rome Half Marathon

The Roma-Ostia Half Marathon begins in Rome's EUR district and proceeds towards the coast at Ostia, distinguishing it as a city-to-sea half marathon rather than a circuit within central Rome. This annual road race, typically held in early to mid-March, attracts Italy's largest half-marathon participation, with previous events seeing approximately 12,000 entries and over 9,000 finishers. The event caters to all levels, featuring a mass race for general participants and a Business Run, which serves as an Italian half-marathon championship for corporate teams. The course runs in a direct southeasterly direction from EUR to the coast, incorporating long sections along Via Cristoforo Colombo and concluding near Ostia's beaches. Originally, the event was a longer Rome-to-Ostia race of about 27 to 30 km before adapting to the official half-marathon distance of 21.1 km. Some editions benefited from downhill segments and tailwinds, leading to performances not being eligible for records or personal bests; however, subsequent course adjustments have made the race faster and record-eligible. Notable past winners include Olympic marathon champion Stefano Baldini, Boston Marathon winner Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, New York Marathon winner Franca Fiacconi, and Olympic marathon medalist Galen Rupp.

Line 5k

The Line 5k is a 5-kilometre road race held in Rome in late November. It is a short city race, not a long-distance challenge, with a straightforward public message: runners unite against violence toward women. The event is also known as Corri Libera, meaning “Run Free” in Italian. While specific course details are scarce, its distance makes it accessible for walkers, novice runners, club runners seeking a quick effort, and individuals wishing to support the cause without undertaking a longer race.

About cycling & running in Rome

Rome Training Notes

Running: Locals keep the easy base miles in Villa Borghese, Villa Doria Pamphili, Villa Ada, and along the Tiber River path. The park loops run about 5km when you want tidy Z2 without thinking. The Tiber River path runs about 11 km from Ponte Milvio, and Appian Way Regional Park stretches the day toward roughly 25 km. brings the group feel with sessions, races, Instagram, Strava, and Whatsapp. Run Rome The Marathon anchors the calendar, while III^ Rome Half Marathon, Roma Urbs Mundi, and XV^ Atleticom We Run Rome keep the city sharp.

Cycling: Locals ride the Lungotevere pista ciclabile for steady base miles, and the route gives you about 35 km beside the river. Appian Way, or Via Appia Antica, gives riders roughly 25 km including Aqueduct Park when the legs want old stones and longer rhythm. Villa Borghese suits easier spins, while Villa Pamphili asks more from intermediate riders. Villa Doria Pamphili sits west of the Gianicolo hill, so the climbing mood starts there. Aventino, Palatine, Circo Massimo, and Celio hills give punchier work for intervals. Rome cyclists find community by asking around, joining groups, and going with the flow.

Season: Spring and Autumn are the clean pick for both sports, because the city gives you warm light, workable mornings, and steady weeks for Z2. Summer changes the plan fast, because temperatures above 35 °C are common and locals go early to beat the heat when the Pantheon is still quiet. Winter stays useful for training, because Rome days are seldom dark or rainy for more than two days in a row. Evenings turn chillier, so runners keep layers close and cyclists make the long ride a daylight job.
