At Chuo Alps Nishikoman Bokka, runners carry firewood for Nishikoma Sanso, a mountain hut in Japan's Central Alps. This September hill climb on mountain trails, held since 2013, offers participants a choice between a 3 kg or 15 kg load. The concept derives from bokka, the traditional work of transporting supplies up a mountain, transforming the challenging ascent into a functional delivery for the hut. The course follows Central Alps trails towards Nishikoma Sanso, the northernmost mountain hut in the range, which reopened after renovation in 2014. Participants arrive with wood that will be utilized at the hut, aligning with the event's theme of providing warmth through personal effort. The competition is select and geared towards mountain enthusiasts, unlike large urban events: one recent edition saw 160 starters and 147 finishers, with another recording a 99.2% completion rate. Registration is managed via Sports Entry and concludes when the first-come, first-served capacity is reached.
