About this race
The PSS Imperial Palace Health Running event takes place at Tokyo’s Imperial Palace, starting and finishing near the clock tower inside Sakuradamon Gate. Distances offered are 5 km, 10 km, 20 km, and a 20 km relay. Individual entry fees are 1,000 yen, with the relay at 4,000 yen. Longer races begin earlier, while the 5 km and 10 km start at 9:00 AM. All events conclude by 11:00 AM. The race accommodates beginners and experienced runners, with limits of approximately 100 participants per individual category and up to 25 relay teams.
The race's informal structure is intentional; the organizer refers to it as “Japan’s most relaxed race.” Late arrivals, same-day registrations, and distance adjustments on race day are permitted. Participants who stop mid-race are not automatically marked as Did Not Finish (DNF); their completed distance can be recorded, and custom distances like 15 km can be accommodated. However, lap cutoffs are enforced: 20 km runners must reach a certain point by mid-morning, and 10 km runners must pass the halfway mark within a set time. Feedback indicates it serves as an affordable method to assess current fitness, practice lap pacing, and undertake supported long-run training on the Imperial Palace circuit.
