About this race
The Yodogawa Kanpei Marathon takes place over two days at Yodogawa River Park in Hirakata, Osaka. Comedian Kanpei Hazama and many Yoshimoto performers lead the event. It is not a typical road race; the program combines comedy with races for serious runners, families, children, walkers, pairs, relay teams, stroller participants, and runners with disabilities. The main race options include a half marathon, 10 km, ekiden, 5 km pair event, elementary school 3 km, walking events, a stroller walk from age zero, and a Heartful Run, offered across 8 event types and 16 divisions.
The course follows a special layout on the left bank of the Yodo River, starting and finishing near the wide Hirakata section of the national riverside park. Saturday focuses on shorter and more inclusive events, while Sunday features the half marathon, 10 km, and ekiden. The pair 5 km requires both partners to finish together, and the elementary school race records every finisher's time. The event originated as a joint anniversary project by Yoshimoto Kogyo and Sankei Shimbun, maintaining a charity connection to the Great East Japan Earthquake recovery. One hundred yen from each entry fee is donated through the Sankei Shimbun welfare and cultural project. Kanpei's personal history adds significance to this charity aspect: he completed a round-the-world Earth Marathon over 766 days and 41,040 km while undergoing cancer treatment, subsequently supporting disaster-affected communities through the RUN FORWARD KANPEI Michinoku Marathon.
