About this race
The Polar Night Marathon is a winter race series in Tromsø, Norway, held in early January during the polar night when the sun remains below the horizon. Participants can select from four road races: the Ishavskraft Marathon, the Polar Night Half Marathon, Mørketidsmila (10 km), and a 5 km race named the Darkness Strip or Mørketidstrimen. The half marathon, situated near 70 degrees north, is the world's northernmost AIMS-certified half marathon. The full marathon course is also AIMS measured and certified.
The race takes place during daylight hours, though the light is the blue Arctic half-light preceding the sun's return to Tromsø. The course follows city streets illuminated by torches, candles, and winter lights, with a possibility of seeing the northern lights if conditions are favorable. Spectators offer encouragement along sections of the route as runners approach the finish. The series has been organized since 2004. The marathon distance is intended for experienced runners who have previously completed the distance.
