Midnight Sun Marathon

The Midnight Sun Marathon is a road marathon held in Tromsø, Norway, located approximately 350 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. Taking place annually in June near the summer solstice, it holds the distinction of being the world's northernmost AIMS-certified marathon. The full marathon's start and finish lines are situated in the city center. The course crosses the Tromsø Bridge two times, offering participants a route that combines city and island scenery instead of a basic out-and-back. The timing of the race is directly related to its name, as participants run under the midnight sun, with daylight persisting in Tromsø throughout the night. Established in 1990 and organized by the Midnight Sun Marathon Foundation, the event attracts a few thousand participants. Recent results indicate 1,537 finishers in the marathon. A Sami temporary dwelling has been utilized as a shelter during the event.

Senja Skyrace

Senja Skyrace begins at sea level in Fjordgård, located on Norway’s island of Senja. From there, runners head directly towards the steep landmarks situated above the fjord. This skyrunning race, held in August, covers 26 km with approximately 2,400 m of elevation gain, concluding in Husøy. The finish is preceded by a final kilometer on the road, encountered when fatigue is already significant. The course ascends towards Segla, proceeds along the ridge towards Barden, and descends to the saddle below Grytetippen. It then climbs again to Grytetippen and Keipen, which marks the race’s highest point at 938 m. Following Keipen, participants experience a sustained downhill section before navigating more undulating terrain. A descent leads towards the county road, followed by a crossing of Riven, and the final approach into Husøy. The event was formerly organized as Sans Senja, featuring multiple distances and starting points. The current iteration utilizes the shortest of these previous courses, with potential for future growth.

Tromsø Mountain Challenge

Tromsø Mountain Challenge is a late-summer trail running weekend in Tromsø, above the Arctic Circle, with four off-road races packed into three days. The distances range from a short 2.4 km uphill blast to a 50 km ultra, with 10.6 km and 25 km options in between. Runners can enter one race or take on the Triple, and the event is organized by the Foundation Midnight Sun Marathon, the same group behind Tromsø races under the midnight sun, autumn colors, and polar night. The routes go through Arctic mountain terrain with fjords nearby, steep climbs, scree slopes, stairs, plateaus, and technical single track. The shortest race gains 409 m in just 2.4 km, while the 50K climbs 2,245 m, so even the smaller events are not casual jogs. Several races drop back through Tromsdalen to finish at TUIL Arena. The mix of rough terrain, fast-changing mountain weather, and end-of-summer autumn color brings back runners who want a hard mountain weekend rather than a standard road race.

About cycling & running in Tromsø

Tromso Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Tromso Bridge when they want city-centre rhythm with a view, and the Midnight Sun Marathon crosses it twice. Northern Runners keeps the social side easy, and Tromso IL, TUIL, BUL Tromso, Mainland Running Club, and Arctic Blizzard give you plenty of company. Krokenmila, Reinen, and Folkeparken handle the regular sharp stuff through Tromsokarusell Lop. The Moxy hotel route towards Telegrafbukta stays useful when you just need base miles. The Kvaloya bridge route towards Eidehandel gives you about 7 km more after the bridge, and reindeer are a real bonus there.

Cycling: Locals ride Tromsoya island for quick loops, Tromsdalen valley for climbing legs, and Kvaloya when the Z2 day needs sea air. Tromso CK is the club name you hear, and Sykkelkarusell Tromso 2026 is the anchor race to mark. Tromsoya gives roughly 25 km at a relaxed pace, while Tromso to Ersfjordbotn gives 20 km with 200 m elevation. Kaldfjord to Tromvik gives 34 km and 350 m elevation, and Tromso to Belvika gives 23 km with 377 m elevation. Fløya sits above Tromsdalen when you want mountain-bike routes, singletrack feel, and harder intervals.

Season: June, July, and August are the best months, and the city feels strange in a good way when the night never really arrives. Summer weather stays cool and variable, with cloudy, rainy, and sunny weeks all possible, so locals keep layers close and keep training anyway. The Midnight Sun Marathon makes late starts feel normal, and the trails around Granåsen, Myrbakken, Tromso Mountain Challenge, and Backyard Tromso Ultra can feel surreal. Winter changes both sports fast. Sidewalks and bikepaths stay decently maintained, studded shoes help runners, and fatbikes with studded tires keep cyclists moving on roads, fresh snow, trails, and groomed ski trails.
