Grensetrimmen is a low-key recreational race held at Støa in Trysil, near the Norwegian-Swedish border. It takes place on the first Saturday in September and has been a fixture on the local running calendar since 1983. The main race is advertised as 10 km, but the measured distance is 9.3 km, and the route has remained consistent since its inception. The course follows forest roads, trails, and gravel paths in the border region, with short asphalt sections on the Swedish side. It is largely flat and straightforward, featuring some moderate ascents in the central part. Participants run through the eastern Trysil forest, crossing near the national border before returning to Støa. The event attracts local runners, recreational athletes, and returning participants. Recent years have seen increasing numbers, including a record participation for its 40th anniversary, and a shorter 4.8 km Halvtrimmen option.
Granestua Race is a 10 km terrain race in Arendal, Norway. The start is at Sparebanken Sør Amfi in Myra, and the finish is at Granestua. It is also known as Førstemann til Granestua, and the race is a traditional forest run held in late August. The route follows forest trails from Myra toward Granestua, distinguishing it as a trail race rather than a road 10K. Agder Bedriftsidrettskrets organizes the event. The field is modest in size, with 119 runners listed, giving it more of a local community-race feel than a large-scale event.
Running: Locals run the city centre, Hisøya, Tromøya, Hove, Granestua, Fossbekk, and the Arendal/Grimstad karuselløp loops. The Arendal/Grimstad karuselløp loop is 48 km and climbs 82 m, so it works for steady base miles or a sharper Z2 lap. Skagerrakmila anchors June with 10 km through the city centre and eastern outskirts. 4 km. Tromøy Ultra gives the longer crowd their day. Locals treat the races like club night, even when no named run club is on the brief.
Cycling: Arendal Cykleclub is the local hub, founded on February 14, 1975, with nearly 350 members and groups for women, men, youth, senior, and veteran riders. The club covers road cycling, mountain biking, and trail cycling, so the bunch can split into crit legs, gran fondo pace, cyclocross habits, or singletrack sessions. Herefoss Rundt is the anchor road tour, and Vårtråkken gives the time-trial crowd a target. Arendal - The long way around runs 49 km. Herefoss Rundt runs 90 km. The climbs come as the road leaves the coast, and locals know to spin, spin, spin.
Season: June, July, and August are the cleanest months for training in Arendal. Summer days stay sunny and mild, and daytime temperatures usually sit between 19°C and 24°C, which suits early intervals, evening Z2, and long rides over Hisøya and Tromøya. The coast keeps the feel fresh, but the wind can still bite from the side. Winter temperatures hover around 0°C, and easterlies can bring heavy snow before thaw turns it soft. Runners keep using trail and gravel when footing allows. Riders shift toward steadier roads, MTB, and trail cycling when conditions make sense.
