Wings For Life Run

Wings for Life World Run is a global charity race held annually since 2014 on the first weekend of May. Rather than requiring participants to complete a set distance, it challenges each runner to continue until a Catcher Car overtakes them. The race takes place simultaneously in numerous locations worldwide. Consequently, participants in Europe and Africa typically begin around midday, those in Asia and Australia run later in the day, and runners in the Americas might start in the early morning or at night. All registration fees support the Wings for Life foundation's research into spinal cord injuries and paraplegia, with Red Bull covering organizational expenses. Each location sets up a long course, potentially up to 100 km, though most participants do not cover such distances. Thirty minutes after the start, the Catcher Car begins at 14 km/h, increasing its speed by 1 km/h every half hour. When the car passes a runner, their race concludes, and their result is the distance achieved. Buses transport overtaken runners back to the starting area, accommodating beginners, club athletes, and professionals concurrently. The foundation was established by motocross world champion Heinz Kinigadner and Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz. Kinigadner's personal history, involving his brother and son who use wheelchairs after accidents, lends a personal connection to the cause.

Bèrghem Ultra Trail

Bèrghem Ultra Trail is a mountain and trail ultrarun on Norway’s Hedmark plateau, with Brumunddal as its event base. Runners choose between two long distances, 130 km or 260 km, so even the shorter option is a serious wilderness race. It is listed as a June event and sits firmly in the fjelløp tradition: rough ground, long hours outside, and terrain that matters as much as pace. The route changes from year to year, but it stays on Hedmarksvidda, the broad upland area above eastern Norway’s towns and farmland. The event is built around showcasing Norwegian wilderness rather than repeating one fixed course, so returning runners should expect a different line through the plateau. The field is likely to be made up of experienced trail and ultra runners, because both distances demand navigation, patience, and comfort in remote mountain conditions.

Hamar Backyard Ultra

Hamar Backyard Ultra 50M is a short-format backyard race in Hamar, Norway, beginning at the main entrance of Prestrudhallen. Runners depart together at 08:00 and complete a 6.706 km loop each hour, with the last possible start at 19:00. This is half of the standard 24-hour backyard format: 12 laps, 50 miles, and slightly over 80 km if all loops are finished. Missing the next hourly start means the race concludes. The format originates from the Backyard Ultra concept started by Big’s Backyard Ultra in Tennessee, though Hamar's version is limited and more contained. If multiple runners complete the final lap, the winner is determined by who ran that lap quickest; others are ranked by laps finished and then lap time. Hamarløperne, a local running club, organizes the event. Past events have attracted a large local field, with photos from around lap seven showing 34 runners completing the full 50-mile distance out of 95 participants.

About cycling & running in Hamar

Hamar Training Notes

Running: Locals put steady runs into Ankerskogen, Hamar’s green lung, because the park keeps things simple and close to town. Ankerskogen parkrun gives the week a regular hit from August 17th, and it works well for controlled Z2 or sharper intervals. Mjøsen Trail brings the proper anchor feel, with 10 km and 42 km options and over 300 vertical meters in the race. BDO-mila Hamar keeps it social with 5 km and 10 km choices. Odden Stafetten, Hamarkarusellen, Ilsengløpet 2026, and HA Ottestad løpsfestival 2026 fill the calendar without making Hamar feel hectic.

Cycling: Locals ride from the city straight into Mjøsa country, where the roads are varied and the landscape is pretty up and down. Mjøstråkk gives a clean base-miles loop, and the 41 km round can be cycled in an afternoon. The route rolls through undulating cultural and arable landscape, with 80% asphalt and 20% gravel roads. EuroVelo 3 and the Pilgrim’s Route pass through Hamar, and none of the climbs are huge, just lots of smaller ones. Hamar Cykleklubb and Ottestad IL Sykkel carry the club scene. Dawn Patrol runs every Tuesday at 6 am from May to September, and Hamarrittet 2026 is the anchor race.

Season: May to October is the clean riding window, and May to September is when Dawn Patrol makes Tuesday mornings easy to commit to. Summer in Hamar is comfortably warm, and Mjøsa gives long light for Z2, gran fondo prep, crit legs, and easy spins after work. Runners keep Ankerskogen useful through the year, and the winter Hamarkarusellen races give cold-season structure. Winter in Hamar turns fairly dry and cold, so locals swap some road speed for steadier footing, indoor work, and careful layering. Cyclists keep the mindset, but the best outdoor rhythm clearly belongs to the warmer months.
